  • Blog Action Day Hawaii Style

Next month, we expect about 100 pairs of Laysan albatrosses will return to Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge to breed, lay a single and care for their one chick until it fledges some time in July. Factor in three birds for each nest site (not all birds breed), and I don’t even need a calculator to sum up the fact that Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge doesn’t contribute much to the overall Laysan albatross population. Not compared to Midway.  But that may change.

  • Hawaii’s St. Damien

Destination: Hawaii Island, Kauai, Maui, Oahu

Pope Benedict XVI canonized Jozef De Veuster yesterday, Rosary Sunday, October 11, 2009. In Hawai'i, we know him as Father Damien.  He arrived in Hawai’i on March 19, 1864 as Brother Damien. Two months later, the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace ordained him a priest. In 1873, Father Damien asked to be assigned to a peninsula on the north shore of Moloka’i, known as Kalaupapa, where he could minister to the 816 Hawaiians who had been exiled there, because they suffered from Hansen’s Disease.

  • Multi-Cultural Healing on Kauai

    Destination: Kauai

For centuries Hawaiians traveled to a healing heiau (sacred site) in Lawai valley. Then, in the late 1800s, Asian immigrants arrived to work on sugar plantations and erected Taoist and Shinto temples. In 1904, a series of eighty-eight small Shingnon shrines--miniature temples with figures of wood and stone--were crafted and set along a path to replicate a traditional temple pilgrimage route of more than 1,000 miles in Shikoku, Japan, that was established more than 1,000 years ago.

  • Big Waves, Yoga & Equanimity

    Destination: Oahu

As I write this, the ocean is swelling and waves are building as they roll over shallower depths making their way for these Hawaiian Islands—in particular, the shores of Ha’ena and Hanalei on Kaua’i and Waimea Bay, Banzai Pipline and Sunset on O’ahu.  It is the first big swell of the season.  (That’s the reason for all those vehicles toting surfboards you may see on the road today.)

  • Makana Packs the House on Kauai

    Destination: Kauai

Makana music CD coversLast night, the contemporary slack key guitarist Makana played solo at the Tahitian Lanai Bar & Grill at the Waipouli Beach Resort on Kaua'i.  The Tahitian Lanai Bar & Grill is a small restaurant--open air with an ocean view.  Few knew about the restaurant on Kaua'i's east side.  That is, until Makana performed there last night.  He packed the house.

  • Shave Ice Hawaii Style

Destination: Hawaii Island, Kauai, Maui, Oahu

mother and daughter enjoy shave ice in hawaiiShave ice as we know it is believed to have been invented in Yokohana,  Japan, in 1869. (Yes, 1869.) By the 1920s, shave ice was a fixture in stores throughout Japan. It only made sense, then, that as Japanese moved to Hawai'i and opened stores, they sold shave ice, as well. The frozen concoction isn't isolated to Japan and Hawaii, as many of you may know. It's found around the world. What makes Hawai'i's particularly nice, we think, is its super-fine, fluffy texture and tasty tropical flavors.

  • Possibility is Alive on Kauai

    Destination: Kauai

Earlier in the day, as I chatted with the gas station attendant who pumped gas into my Jeep, we both commented on the day. Only a few clouds mingled above the mountaintops in the center of the island. The sky and the ocean gleamed a brighter blue than normal. It felt like a chocolate sundae kind of day.
