It was dark until 6:41 a.m. at 22 degrees northern latitude--Kauai--when the sun finally shook off the night and rounded our side of the earth. Rain fell. Trade winds stood at attention. One dog didn’t want to get her feet wet, and so I had to drag her, back legs stiff as 2x4s, outside for the morning walk. Then, the emails started. “Anyone have a weather forecast?” “It’s lookin’ pretty stormy down this way.” “It’s definitely Kona weather, no wind here.” “Should we cancel or just go?” “Let’s forget bikes and just go. Looks like it’s clearing.”

Ghost stories + Hawaii. Not just for Halloween. I like to say ghosts in Hawaii are about a numerous as the chickens on Kauai. One man who believes in ghosts and can make you, too, is Uncle Joe Espinda, Jr. He leads an Orbs of Oahu tour. It includes stops at five sites outside Waikiki. They may all give you chicken skin, or what you may know as goose bumps, but they're not all bad. Well, maybe all but one.

Earlier this week, I slipped out of Waikiki and hiked the trail to Makapu’u Summit along Ka ‘Iwi State Scenic Shoreline. The trail is paved, about 1.5 miles round trip. The hike to the summit is a steady uphill that follows several gentle switchbacks.

Sitting on Hawaiian Airlines bound for Kailua-Kona, I got stuck in a middle seat between a man wearing a suit and reading legal briefs and another man, sleeping, who looked like he just left the beach, wearing Locals slippahs on feet pasted with sand. Sometimes, I feel self-conscious traveling alone throughout Hawaii. Not this day. Not with these guys. They didn’t bat at an eye at me, traveling alone. The theme of this trip for me was national parks. There are five national parks on Hawaii Island. Five. One island the size of Delaware. Five national parks. I had no idea. Did you?

Another Friday Afternoon at Kilauea Point

It’s just another Friday afternoon at the refuge, and I am blogging from “Birdville,” a.k.a. Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. The skies overhead are clearing, after a surprising squall provided a bit of cloud clover and respite from the hot sun. Not enough rain fell to clean the windshield, much less soak the soil outside the wedge-tailed shearwater burrows and leach its nourishing bird guano deep into the ground. Funny how Hawaii skies sneak up on you like that.

Mt. Waialeale on Display

As I turned right onto Rice Street, I looked up and saw Mt. Waialeale smack in front of my face, standing sentinel, protecting Lihue town. I’ve traveled this road hundreds of times over the years, why did the appearance of this great mountain—receiving an average of 460 inches of rain per year and touted as the wettest spot on earth by some—suddenly grab my attention? It's not like a cataclysmic event recently jettisoned the mountain to its approximately 5,148 feet.
