I am standing line at Java Kai Hanalei. A sign behind the counter reads, “Unattended children will be given an espresso and a free puppy,” and I hope the free puppy this coffee shop on Kauai is handing out today isn’t my dog Lulu. There’s always a line out the front door of Java Kai, a converted plantation house in the place many like to call the “sleepy surfer town of Hanalei.” Sometimes the line goes out the door and down the two steps into the grass. I arrive, intending to grab a cup of tea and sit at one of the picnic tables on the lawn and write—with my black-and-white heeler mix at my side.

Scratch shark’s fin soup off the menu. It was bound to happen. Either the restaurants would run out of shark fins themselves, because certain shark species are near extinction. Or our society would wake up and say, “No more.” The latter happened. A year ago, then Governor Linda Lingle signed a bill into law that made the possession, sale, trade or distribution of sharks and shark parts—that is, fins—illegal.

When Anni opened Small Town Coffee five years ago, the free WiFi was a big deal. Now, WiFi’s not the only thing Small Town Coffee has going for it. The coffee must be pretty good. According to her website, Sunset magazine thinks her lattes could be the best in the world. A barista behind the counter pumps out iced and hot coffee drinks—from the aforementioned lattes to mochas, cappuccinos, macchiatos and Americanos to espresso and regular, old-school brewed coffee.

At 10:50, sitting in traffic in Kapaa, I knew I'd gotten the timing all wrong. I had ten minutes to go from the north end of Kapaa on Kauai to the Kauai Resource Center on Ahukini Road, near the airport. On a typical day, this would be tight. Today, with the by-pass road that skirts downtown Kapaa and relieves the area of traffic closed for repairs, I would be late. No doubt about it. I do not like being late.

Today is Earth Day. This weekend, as usual, thousands of people will head to the beaches around the Hawaiian Islands. Mahaulepu on Kauai. Haleiwa Beach Park on Oahu. Kaanapali on Maui. Kahaluu Beach Park on Big Island. Most will walk the shoreline or wade into the water. Many will slip snorkel masks over their faces to explore life under the lip of the ocean’s surface. Some will kayak, canoe, surf or sail. A few will participate in the many beach clean up days scheduled to coincide with Earth Day.

This one-time hot dog cart now serves "Taste of Jerusalem, Kosher, Middle-Eastern Cosine." I ordered the cart's standard and popular "Falafel," three fried balls of mashed garbanzo beans stuffed in a hummus-lined pita with a dash of hot sauce, pickled vegetables and yummy tahini sauce on top. (Other selections include eggplant, grilled chicken/lamb and grilled beef/lamb.)

I wanted the three kids to help me on a shave ice round up of Kauai. However, after five days, we’ve talked about going out for shave ice. We’ve remembered it at breakfast time, even. But we have hit shave ice stands exactly zero times. We have managed to put down—on three occasions and after big meals—hula pie. So, I guess this will be a hula pie round up.
