  • Hokulea: Raising Islands and Stories out of the Sea

    Destination: Kauai

Hokulea in Hanalei, Kauai, Hawaii. Photo by Kim Steutermann RogersThere are some writing assignments that are just too big to tackle. It’s little like that giant Hula Pie served at Duke’s Canoe Club. Where do you plunge the first spoonful? Do I go for the whipped cream? The macadamia nut ice cream? What about chocolate cookie crust? And one person cannot be expected to complete the whole thing before it melts, no matter how ravenous. At least, I can’t, and I’ve tried. That’s how I feel when I think about writing about Hokulea.

It's not just school kids who hate to see the summer come to an end. Have you squeezed in your summer vacation yet? What about your summer reading list? Dented it? Just when I think I have made good headway into the massive collections of books on my bedside table, on my desk, on the end table next to my reading chair, and the one in my tote bag, I find another one--or three--books that I think I really must read. The end result is: Too many books; not enough time. Sigh.

Hawaiian monk seal pup wakes up from napYesterday, our newest Hawaiian monk seal pup on Kauai became official. He was outfitted with a pair of red, plastic tags with a couple letters and numbers, sort of like his social security number. He's only two months old, but the little stinker is already causing a stir. A few weeks ago, his mother weaned him. As you can see from some of the photos in the slide show, he's a plump, little thing. At this stage in his life, he is exploring his watery environs and figuring out where to get his nourishment now that mom--and her milk--is gone. Earlier this week, he was reportedly behaving strangely, using his flipper to dig in his mouth, coughing, and gagging, repeatedly. I was asked to accompany a team to investigate and after careful study, we concluded he must have eaten something he didn't like.
