Earlier this week, I slipped out of Waikiki and hiked the trail to Makapu’u Summit along Ka ‘Iwi State Scenic Shoreline. The trail is paved, about 1.5 miles round trip. The hike to the summit is a steady uphill that follows several gentle switchbacks.
The payoff at the summit is some spectacular views of the distant Diamond Head, nearby Koko Head and Koko Crater, as well as, the islets Manana and Kaohikaipu, also known as Rabbit Island. And, of course, the spectacular Makapu’u Lighthouse with its 100+ year-old lighthouse made with an historic “hyper-radiant—e.g. super-size—lens.
But what next caught my eye and wonder were a series of locks attached to the fence at the summit. One a dial lock like this one. The rest locks with a key assembly--several small like the kind we used to use on suitcases. They didn’t keep a gate closed. They didn’t seem to have a purpose at all. No one I asked seemed to know, either.
